The 7 Leader Questions

Tactical Questions for Leaders Before, During, and After Operations

What do you get when you combine Star Wars, Gettysburg, Ali v. Frazier and 4 other battles? A series of case studies titled The 7 Leader Questions designed for tactical leaders.

The 7 Leader Questions began with the reflections of a Lieutenant Colonel preparing to lead an infantry battalion. The first question started as “Am I dominating terrain?” It evolved into “Am I on good ground?” The other questions followed. In its reorganization, it is meant to flow as linearly as a battle might while also understanding that tactical operations are fluid and iterative.

These 7 questions don’t replace doctrine, nor do they add to it. Instead, they examine doctrinal truths about war and maxims that transcend any single era of battle. They organize maneuver doctrine into an easily digestible construct. This set of case studies serves to teach and explain the construct. But it doesn’t stop there. The value of these questions comes from the continued conversations you will have back at your unit. They are for leaders to consider before, during, and after operations. Before–while planning. During–intuitively, while in the fight. After–in your after action reviews.

Being a war-fighter is also about being a student. Pros put in the time and intellectual rigor to understand their craft. It takes reps, and you can’t get enough reps from LFX and STX alone. Put The 7 Leader Questions into action!
