The Company Leader community is far-reaching and diverse. As iron sharpens iron, so does one person sharpen another. We are reminded of this with the daily engagements on social media and the email submission we receive. Recently, a Captain from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reached out with a fantastic tactical decision game (TDG) resource for our archives. And now, we share it with you!
The document Capt. Wasson shared with us is named “What Now Lieutenant.” Published in 1975 by the 9th Infantry Division, with excerpts in Infantry and Armor Magazine, this document was built as a tactical “simulation” for junior officers and NCOs.
The document, while dated, is still very relevant today. The scenarios are based on historical events. And the structure has established points to pause for leader input and discussion.
Major General Howard F. Stone’s, the 9th Infantry Division Commander at the time, wrote in the document’s Foreword:
“What Now, Lt?” is a simple concept with far-reaching results. I had it developed for the purposes of providing the junior officers and NCOs of the 9th Infantry Division a vehicle for exercising effective decision making. With the hindsight of history and the keen imagination of today’s leaders, key lessons can be learned with minimum use of our valuable training time. This action-packed simulation is easy to set up and inexpensive to operate. It gives our junior leaders experiences in tactical decision-making, small unit operations, and vagaries of changing combat circumstances.
I enthusiastically commend this training tool to the commanders in the 9th Infantry Division as a realistic means to increase the readiness of the United States.
